Five Italian Divers Dead in Maldives Cave Diving Tragedy — The Worst in the Nation's History
What Happened?
Five Italian nationals have died following a scuba diving accident in the Maldives' Vaavu Atoll, according to Italy's foreign ministry. The divers are believed to have perished while attempting to explore underwater caves at a depth of approximately 50 meters.
The incident took place on May 14, during a dive from the Duke of York liveaboard vessel in Devana Kandu, a channel near Alimathaa island, roughly 100 kilometres south of the Maldivian capital, Malé.
Who Were the Victims?
Four of the five divers were connected to the University of Genoa. Among them was Associate Professor of marine biology Monica Montefalcone, 51, accompanied by her 23-year-old daughter Giorgia Sommacal. Also in the group were research assistant Muriel Oddenino, 31, and marine biology graduate Federico Gualtieri, 31. The fifth diver was Gianluca Benedetti, a diving instructor from Padua and operations manager for Luxury Yacht Maldives.
The Rescue Operation
Maldivian authorities launched a major rescue operation after the group failed to surface by midday Thursday, deploying boats, aircraft, and dive teams to search the area. One body was recovered from approximately 60 meters below the surface, while the remaining four divers were believed to be trapped inside the same cave system.
Italy's ambassador to Colombo, who oversees relations with the Maldives, traveled to Malé to meet with coast guard officials, while the Italian Embassy maintained contact with the victims' families.
Why Was the Cave So Dangerous?
According to well-known Maldives diving instructor Shaff Naeem, the cave entrance lies between 55 and 58 metres deep, extending inward to approximately 100 metres before forking and descending further — making it unsuitable for standard air or divers without technical cave training. A yellow weather warning had also been issued that day, with rough seas and strong currents complicating both the dive and the subsequent search.
A Historic Tragedy for the Maldives
This has been described as the deadliest single diving incident in Maldives' history. The tragedy has stirred deep grief across Italy's academic and scientific communities, given the victims' ties to marine research, and has reignited serious debate about the risks of deep cave diving in remote destinations.
